okay. so. i've been a very honest person all throughout my anime quest
i told the truth about fruits basket, and how i immediately went and watched all of it, even though i'm only meant to watch one episode per show. as per the rules, of my, anime quest. so i feel like it's only fair if i disclose...
i... have had past experiences with keroro. *pause for shocked gasps to ripple throughout the crowd* but i've let it stay on the spreadsheet because i truly, do not remember a single thing about it. i remember the characters. i don't remember the story.
i also. made an OC for it. not because i particularly cared about it, but because my childhood friend group at the time was all really into keroro, so i watched a bit of it and made an OC so i could play toys with everyone else LOL
i will try to review this episode like i'd never met keroro before. i am sorry. i hope you will be able to find it in your heart to forgive me.

sgt frog opens on This little freaky frog guy terrorizing a random japanese family.
he comes from an alien planet with the goal of taking over planet earth. he's a sergeant. military frog. except his mothership kinda sorta abandoned him so now he just lives in the basement froggily
there isnt really an overarching plot it's just a silly sitcom-style show with a bunch of other shit happening. there's the human family (these are the only pictures i got of them all together so sorry they're not the best LOL) which are all their own type of characters. natsumi is the BITCH SISTER, fuyuki is the NERD BABY BROTHER, and aki is Sci-Fi Writer Mother. natsumi is my favorite and i am biased forever for this. she's so funny
all of them have their own selfish reasons to keep keroro (that's the freak's name) in their house. he does chores he could be the nerd boys friend and he could inspire writer mama. and the comedy comes from there
and admittedly there are a lot of pretty funny jokes. there's also a "narrator" character who continually breaks character and says things like "Ok so im reading the show's bible here" and he points out inconsistences with the writing "but if his kero-ball is out of battery, how did he get the voicemail? ... so what if i'm the narrator?!"
do i want to watch more?
the most interesting part of sgt frog to me is that for each human character, there seems to be a corrosponding frog character. in the next episode (spoilers. SORRY.) one of the frogs from keroro's platoon shows up, and he's an angry red frog that's pretty obviously meant to be a parallel to natsumi. natsumi has a crush on a mysterious boy with silver hair and blue eyes, and there's a mysterious frog with a silver headpiece and blue eyes... and so on.
based off of this first episode alone, i would watch more. and i literally did. i did that already in the past LOL
i like the frog designs a LOT i think they're really good at all conveying different personalities and not being too similar to one another, while also still obviously all being cohesive.

the main reasons why i stopped watching sgt frog was just because the episodes got kind of annoying and there was an annoying amount of "skirt humor". because natsumi wears a skirt and there's a lot of times where she goes "AHHH YOU ARE AN ALIEN AND DO NOT UNDERSTAND HUMAN MODESTY AND THEREFORE SOMETHING WACKY AND UNCONVENTIONAL IS HAPPENING TO MY SKIRT WHICH THEREFORE LENDS ITSELF TO COMEDY DUE TO THE EXPECTATIONS AHHHHH" and i kinda got sick of it. and also they didnt introduce all of the frogs fast enough i got bored. there's like 5 frog characters and i stopped watching when they only had 3. and i'd watched like 11 episodes at that point

im so entertained it's like a wonderful saturday morning cartoon i want to lock on to 4kids and watch it weekly and make up theories every week of what kind of monster they're going to fight. MAN!!!!!! that was ADORABLE!!!!!!!!!

so the first two magical girls aka "cures" that we meet are nagisa: SPORTS GIRL and hoshino: SMARTS GIRL.
nagisa is spunky and kinda stupid but she's really "popular with girls" and the first ep really beats it over your head. girlie's literally getting LOVE LETTERS in her LOCKER from other girls in her class.
hoshino is really smart and good at science and allegedly she's "really popular with boys". there is nothing in this first episode to show that. but she is also called the Goddess of Knowledge and she likes science and space and she has 2 family members. her doggy and her gramma.

So cellphones fall from the sky.
with little freakos in them. the freakos both lead their respective girl to an amusement park where they encounter this weird guy
and this guy is already pretty freaky looking and acting and i don't like him or anything he stands for or loves
and he summons like a big evil shadow-worm to attack the girls and all of this (because they wont give him their little freaky cellphones with little freakies in them)

thats the most upsetting thing about him.
but ok yeah yeah sure ok fine he's piss. sure. the shadow-worm he summoned gives the girls the excuse to transform into their magical girl outfits which really. that's what we're all here for
i really really really enjoyed this transformation sequence they got sent to the GAY CHROME DIMENSION and the way the clothes are animated and appear onto the bodies is so satisfying to watch. especially the shoes the shoes were so fun
and YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES THESE DESIGNS ARE SO ACTUALLY AWESOME!!!! THEYRE SO FUCKING GOOOOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

there honestly isn't really that much characterization for both of the girls just yet, like we know a bit about nagisa but we really don't have that much info on hoshino, aside from the little blurbs ive written about each of them up there ^ but from the few interactions that they show, im very very interested to see how they'll change as characters over time. nagisa fucking HATES the weird little phone guys (mepple and mipple) and hoshino's down to clown with them

HEEEEELLLLL YEAH i love a good genuine magical girl anime they're so fun to watch for me. and especially this one im in love with the art style it's very 2000s and i love it. nagisa's cure black outfit is one that's always made my brain buzz in a very specific way i just want to stare at it forever. the arm-warmers. the boots. the skirt. fuck YES !!!!

i feel like this show is gaslighting me.
what's going on. what's happening. where am i.
so tohno has had memory problems ever since he was a little kid. the entire episode he's just trying to figure out his surroundings and people he's with. he continuously gets transported to places without knowing where he is. he forgets seemingly "obvious" information like what he did yesterday, or who his friend group consists of. he can hardly even recognize his sister that he's known since they were kids? it's all very disorienting.

I don't know if he did or not. But he keeps getting visions and flashbacks like he did.
he moved into his sister's house. she has two red-haired maids that look identical except for wearing differently colored bows. sister has such a tight curfew on the house she won't even let tohno leave his bedroom after 10pm

i feel like i might need to take a shower after every episode to get my head back on straight but yeah. it's very interesting considering i DON'T HAVE THE SLIGHTEST IDEA WHAT'S GOING ON. there's a girl with wolverine claws btw. im not telling you who the girl is. i need to drink some water or something
im glad i noticed the "TYPE-MOON" in the opening credits right away otherwise i think i'd be lightheaded from the confusion of seeing the Famous Catgirl (Full-Size Woman) in an anime like this. i like experimental horror stuff.
and btw this anime only has 12 episodes??? i thought it'd be a two-seasoner at least. a lot of the shows i've watched for this year have been multi-seasoners but this one's just the one. huh. interesting.
