i thought it was going to be about a big scary beast of some type just based on the name. it turns out it was about a big scary beast known as SELFISHNESS.
the episode opens by quoting REVELATIONS 13 verses 1-4.
"and i saw a beast rising out of the sea having ten horns and seven heads; and on its horns were ten diadems, and on its heads were blasphemous names; and the dragon gave it his power and his throne and great authority. they worshipped the dragon, for he had giving authority to the beast, and they worshipped the beast, saying, who is like the beast, and who can fight against it?"
sooo. nothing bad could ever happen
he's got a pretty fine life. he's pretty close with the hospital's director, and also. the director's daughter. they're getting married soon aww how nice. in this screenshot he's just been pulled out of the operating room on the director's orders, because another patient has just been admitted and tenma NEEEEDS to operate on this one instead.
ahh another life in the day of da surgeon
in the next scene we get to meet his fiance. and she basically always has this expression on her face
we also get to see a shot of the hospital's director on tv, talking about the emergency surgery that tenma DESPERATELY needed to operate on. it turns out it was for a very famous and important opera singer.
... when the hospital director talks about the surgery, he kinda makes it sound like he's the one that did it. but it's fine that's fine it's okay. whatever. it doesnt matter to tenma that much, the director's done a lot for him!
the next day, dr tenma's just finished up another surgery and is walking through the halls, when he's suddenly GRABBED by a random woman that he's never seen before
Oh Fuck! That other guy! The one whose operation tenma got suddenly pulled out of!
it turns out that the replacement surgeon assigned to operate on that guy was dr becker. and the patient FUCKING DIED !!!!!! and he's left behind a WIFE AND SON!!!
there's not really much else that tenma can do about this. he's still thinking about the encounter later that night during dinner with his fiance.
"if i operated on that man... he probably would have survived. i was just following orders from the director, it isn't my fault, right?"
she looks so mean at all times its almost cartoonish.
she basically goes "Man shut up. obviously its not your fault. Anyway my friend and i argued over this dress..."

there's also a scene after this where tenma talks to the director in his house and he just says so many things that sound so evil. "Doctors aren't volunteers, theyre scholars." like god damn dude

late at night, tenma is suddenly called in on an emergency operation. someone broke into the house of a family that had recently fled to east germany, and killed the parents, and left one child majorly injured (bullet in brain), and the other completely untouched but mentally scarred. (she just watched her whole family get bullets in brains)
the doctors look at the xrays and im mainly including this screenshot because they used a real xray of a skull instead of just drawing it
although im not sure if it's a child's skull xray they used or an adult one...? i dont really know enough about xrays but it doesnt look like it has teeth above the first pair of teeth (this is the only notable thing i know about child skulls. and these kids dont seem old enough to have lost all their baby teeth yet)
whatever. dr tenma looks at the xrays and determines that it's going to be a very delicate operation, and that they need to get started ASAP. but, right before he's about to begin the operation...
* knock knock knock *
THAT'S RIGHT!
HE'S GETTING PULLED OUT OF THE GOD DAMN OPERATING ROOM AGAIN.
WHY?
THE MAYOR JUST GOT SHOT!!!!!!
the nurse goes "Yeah so the mayor will be here in ten minutes. he's being flown in on a helicopter"
and tenma goes "Well then get dr boyer to do it. I'm about to begin operation on this boy."
and the nurse goes "It's the director's order. Don't worry about this one. DR BECKER WILL DO IT!!!!"
i forgot to mention this earlier, but during the xray scene, DR BECKER SUDDENLY BURSTED IN and went "Hi guys sorry im late" and all the other doctors were yelling at him "HOW THE FUCK WERE YOU LATE??? YOU'RE ON DUTY TONIGHT!"
THAT DR BECKER.
tenma gets on the phone to talk to the director, and convince him to give the mayor a different surgeon. "No, Tenma," says the director, "The Mayor promised to give our hospital lots of extra funding in the coming fiscal year. Do this for me okay?"
So TENMA goes Oh..... Okay............
Director's orders...........
And slowlyyyy walks away from the operating room.................
And what happens next?

do i want to watch more?
YES. i don't usually really give a fuck about medical dramas but this one seems to be setting up a lot of really interesting things. and it's less of a medical drama, and more of a medical mystery. i want to see this corrupt fucking director torn to pieces.

i dont really have any in the typical sense but i enjoyed the few panning views of the scenery we got. and also the logo for the show made me go "Oh! Like Justice!"
i will say it was kind of hard to get into it at first because it was slightly boring to start, but i did pay more attention after that lady started yelling at tenma. and especially after the meeting with the director.

something ive found is that comedy anime is so much harder to write reviews for. because i risk ruining all the damn jokes.
this is a REALLY fucking strong first episode. every single joke lands. it cuts between fight scenes using a vinyl scratch sound which just rules. the whole thing fucking rocks. what the hell am i supposed to say? go watch it? yeah that is what im supposed to say. my god

i'll do it hellsing style sparknotes. if that makes anyone happy. same deal as hellsing. if you really really want to know what happens you can read it. but youd get a lot more enjoyment out of just watching it for yourself. i really fucking liked it
-story takes place in "edo" period
-2 plots happening simultaneously, one in a dumpling shop, and the other outside.
-in the dumpling shop, the governor's son and his buddies are kickin' up a fuss being disrespectful ruffians and making everyone uncomfortable, when suddenly...
-outside, the governor is making a poor man plead for his life, and tells his guards to execute him on the spot, when suddenly...
-A Rogue Swordsman Shows Up!
-eventually, the two swordsmen encounter each other and begin to fight
-they're caught, imprisoned, and set up for execution
-The Girl from the Dumpling Shop throws down two FIREWORK BOMBS in order to drive away the crowds and get them out of the execution!!!!
-And Now They're All Best Friends

Holy Shit OBVIOUSLY. that was SO FUN. and FUNNY too!! but not like overly funny to where it feels like its trying too hard you know??? and the ANIMATION FOR THE FIGHTS!!!!!! AGHHH!!!!!
the character writing and interactions are REALLY strong. i want to keep up with these guys! i give a shit! i wanna know what happens to them!!!

the lighting and colors during moody times-of-day are so good too. they didnt need to make this scene so pretty
also re: every joke landing. im sure that somewhere in this series is a bad joke. it's a comedy from 2004. but as far as first episodes go it has not aged poorly at ALL. & i can only fucking hope that that stays true for the whole series because I Like it a lot based off episode 1. Praying.
