POPEE THE PERFORMER EPISODE 1
i did not know that it was anime i thought it was an independant youtube production made by some guy in 2017.
i also didnt know anything else about it aside from that people on tumblr were obsessed with it for a second.
anyway the actual structure is really unique! it was like 5 minutes long, no dialog just music. which explains the 39 fucking episodes jesus CHRIST
the 3d animation is really rough in a way that i find charming. the character designs are really fun too! i like mask wolf just because their mask’s expression doesnt change like a normal face and instead falls off to reveal a different mask every single time. really funny.
popee is a little freak with a kind of unsettling face but i think that's what theyre going for. so good on them for that
there is no plot to speak of here its just popee trying to do a magician's trick on mask wolf (cut them in half) and it does just literally cut mask wolf in half. then mask wolf cuts popee in half. and then it fades to black with multiple popees circling around mask wolf and doing a weird little dance.
do i want to watch more?
i don't really feel too strongly either way? i think these shorts are more suited to being played on a tv in the corner of a walmart autocenter and not as a "Sit down and watch this entire thing in one sitting" thing.

i like their expression LOL
BOOGIEPOP WA WARAWANAI EPISODE 1
okay i need to be honest i fucked up. i accidentally started watching the 2019 remake
"boogiepop and others" because the little subtitle that animesuge puts underneath the english translated title was
"boogiepop wa warawanai" and i went Oh! So this is the one from 2000! and i only realized when the main character pulled out an iphone and it had the design of an iphone from 2019. anyway i will say that the opening of boogiepop and others is really good. and now for the original boogiepop phantom
okay i REALLY like the opening for the original too. both OPs are very different but both VERY good.
the remake is modern anime poprock and
this one is like freaking jazz fusion. i like this one more i think
it opens with our main character, a highschool girl named tonomura (nickname moto, which i will heretofore be using). she's in a school bathroom, and we overhear other girls talking about some students that have mysteriously disappeared, rumor has it, due to a mysterious shinigami named "BOOGIEPOP". we learn that moto is depressed :( she's also quiet and softspoken, and only talks to other girls. moto is really into cleanliness, constantly washing her hands and using wetwipes to open doors.
the storystructure they use is really interesting. everything is told in 'scenes' with titles, jumping around the timeline a bit, with moto as our narrator. which also makes it difficult for me to explain whats happening without ruining the pacing. the pacing in this first episode is really good! this is a horror anime and they build tension really well. i think i wouldve been more shocked if i didnt ruin it with the inferior and boring 2019 remake first. theyre very different but it did spoil BOOGIEPOP's design a bit so i wasnt surprised by it.
for the creditbreaks they use fucking breakcore and THE EXACT SAME GOD DAMN VOICE THAT NO MORE HEROES USES TO INTRODUCE ITS BOSSES. it says "boogiepop phantom" obviously but IT;S THE SAME GOD DAMN VOICE ?! Which caught me off guard.
anyway this is a really strong first episode! the artstyle is also refreshing. it's got that 2000s Somewhat Off anatomy, but the characters actually look like human people and i really like that. i wish the moeboom never happened
do i want to watch more?
honestly yeah! i wanna know what happens with moto! i like her!

there weren't any funny moments (this is a horror anime.) but i took these two to show off what moto looks like.
A regular highschool girl! also yeah i know the second one is taller than the first one. i dont like it either
